Research and planning - Good vs Bad trailer

Here I have two trailers, the top one is The conjuring and the second one is Paranormal activity.

Both these trailers have different budgets, The conjuring has a budget of 20 million dollars and paranormal activity has a budget of 15,000 dollars, there is a huge difference here and we can tell that through the trailer. The editing for paranormal activity is not as good as the conjuring's editing, The cinematography in both trailers are very different, as the conjuring was filmed by a camera team, as we can tell through thr quality of the trailer and then Paranormal activity was filmed using a hand held camera which was done through one of the characters boyfriends, this is clearly seen through the budget prices, that it wasn't going to be as good as the conjuring. Also paranormal activity for most of the trailer, showed the audience attending a screening and their reactions and not much of the film, however the conjuring gives the audience an insight into clips of the films, and gives them a view of what the film is about, making them want to continue on to watching the film. Also the mise en scene for both the trailers were very similar, in the sense that they were filmed in homes, and were surrounded by trees and empty land.

However for my Horror trailer I Will not be able to have camera crew like the conjuring did , but like paranormal activity I will be able to use a camera and film like them. However both these trailers are good, overall realistically I think I will be able to film a trailer like paranormal activity rather than the conjuring.

Research and Planning - certificate for film and trailer

These are all of the certificates for film and trailers. For the trailer I am making I will be making it a 15 and the trailer will be a 12, the reason for this is because if the trailer is a !2 then it will be viewable to more people and it will be more known and when the film comes out more people will be able to watch the film.

Research and Planning - Horror trailer analysis - The conjuring

Genre

As Steve Neale has said looking at the trailer, it does seem like other horror trailers and it has its own twist to it. Like this is a haunted house and supernatural things happen, but this has a twist where the first women who built the farm house does not want anybody to live here and her spirit never left the farm house. The trailer also links to what Andrew Sarris says about it being a recognizable style which draws on an existing audience such as the people who like horror films.

Representation

The male role here is represented as Laura Mulvay says as at the beginning he is coming into the new house with his family, this represents that he is a family man and portrays him as a father and a husband, but later on we have role reversal as the women who is the main protagonist is the one who is under attack and is getting scared through the sounds and then she acts brave, exploring what it is that is bothering them instead of the male role.

Narrative

The protagonist we are clearly able to see is the women, the mother and the wife in the family, as she is the one who is getting bruises and also she is the one who sees the time stopping at a certain time, she is the one who realizes that their new home isn't what they had imagined. The trailer will also link to Todorov's theory as the family looked happy at the beginning moving into their new home, but then the disruption of the spirits in the home. The main active characters would be The mother who is the protagonist and the father who helps and the two of the children who weird things happen to, but the passive characters would be the other two children who don't really have anything really going on with them, An anti hero would be the father as towards the end he is the one helping to make things right but is not like your usual hero, as this is the genre if horror it is different to a hero in a comedy ect.

Audience

I think the audience will be passive as it is easily understandable what is happening in the trailer, although the audience will definitely want to know what is going to happen to the mother, and who is behind all this, so this will make them want to watch the film. The film was certified 15 , I also think the trailer will be 15 and aimed at both males and females as the trailer is jumpy and full of action and suspense and is a new Horror that will attract a lot of the target audience.

Media language

Cinematography
A long shot is used when the family are entering the house, this suggest that they are all excited about the new house, also close ups of the faces to show how happy they are in their new home. Close ups are later used when the protagonist is lighting the match stick and it zooms into her face to see the reaction from the clap. we have a pan shot of the protagonist playing hide and clap and then pans out to show that there is nobody near the wardrobe door, also a track is used here to show the protagonist moving towards the wardrobe.

Editing
straight cuts are used and it continues through the trailer,as the trailer starts of its slow paced, but as all the action comes in, it is fast paced this really interacts with the audience as it really engages with the viewer.

Sound
Non diegetic sound is used at the beginning as when they come into the house there is a sound in the background which has got a few beats in it which imply's that something is not right here. Also it shows the mother playing with her kids and the song seems cheerful and happy. For diegetic sound there is a lot of dialogue as they start that at the beginning of thee trailer when they come in and through playing the game, all the way till the end.

Mise en scene
High key lighting is used at the beginning, as they come into the house, this portrays that they are happy and then towards the middle the lighting is low key and this shows that it is the horror genre and also gets more intense and much more suspense is shown. The main prop of the trailer is the house, this is structured very old and dark and the pictures on the wall make it very real, so it engages with the audience that this could happen to anyone. Also a wardrobe is used, this engages with the audience to, getting them engaged and also scared because it gives a sense of realism. The house and the land relate to the genre of horror as it is big and dark and low lighting.

Research and Planning Horror trailer analysis - ' Your Next '

Genre

This trailer has what Steve Neale said "genre is a repetition with an underlying pattern of variations" so this is like another horror genre film, with a twist, to make it individual, for example in other another horror genre film, like The conjuring their is a family who move into a new house and they start hearing noises and feeling a weird presence in their home. This film however is not at a new house, but they go on holiday and come under attack. They both have a similar concept but have their own twists on it to make it their own and different from previous horror genre films. Binary opposites are used, as we can identify the good from the bad, The scene where the man in the mask is sat near the other man, we can see the man in the mask is bad and could be portrayed as the killer, and not the other man. This portrays the genre of horror as in order to find out who is under the mask the characters suffer fear of who will be murdered next.

Representation

The representation of the female characters are very stereotypical in the trailer as they are the ones who are screaming and running around. However the men also are portrayed stereo typically as they are taking charge and protecting the women. Although we do see a role reversal as one of the women is covered in blood and is carrying a weapon, this conveys that the women is trying to capture the murderer. As Laura Mulvey said " Make gaze" I don't see it as the scenes are mostly focused on a group of people who are being attacked.

Narrative

The protagonist of the film is unclear, as a group of people are visible,I think it is possibly the man who is shown in a white jumper, who has his picture taken, or the blonde haired women or the women who has curly brown hair. After one of the men are killed, there are flashes into each of their faces. Ronald Barthes and Levi Strauss both mention Binary oppositions and this can be seen in the trailer as the family are on one side and the killer in the mask is on the other, this conveys the good and the bad side. Also equilibrium is shown, which is mentioned by Todorov, as at the beginning of the trailer the family are enjoying a meal and are portrayed as happy but then there is a disruption where one of the members are killed.

Audience

The trailer says its been approved for an appropriate audience, the film is rated 18, overall I think the the trailer will aim at females and males as who are interested in a film which has suspense and is a horror, although this doesn't look very scary, people who are interested in this will be able to watch it. Although this is rated an 18 and I am only 17 I would not mind watching this so I think the audience will be passive because watching the trailer it is not hard to figure out what is going on and they will be active to find out more about the killer and why its happening.

Media Language

cinematography
we can see the family and friends are going to an isolated area, as we can see long shots of the place and the house, which is giving us a brief insight into the genre of horror. Two shots have been used to portray the couples, which also shows that they are happy and also close ups are used on the characters which conveys their emotions. also low angles are used on the murderers this shows that the murderer is in power. Also a pan shot is used when the man is thrown towards the window and this shows us a sense of action and also The kulshov method is a montage at the end of the trailer.

Editing
At the beginning we have a dissolve which shows when the family are holding hands, this presents the families connection, also as they drove the car up we had a dissolve to show the length of their traveling. straight cuts are used mainly through the trailer but at the beginning its paced slow and gradually builds up towards the end,

Sound
At the start of the trailer Non diegetic sound is used, as the song is being played slowly and cheerfully as it mentions ' just a perfect day' which connects with what is on the screen, we then see a tittle saying ' the perfect family' this represents that the family are having a good time and are happy with their lives.  Also other sounds such as a siren and a drum beat are also present through parts of the trailer, this reflects a more sinister tone on the trailer, indicating that something is not right. coming towards the end of the trailer the song repeats itself, as congruent sound as the song is happy in contrast to what is happening on screen, people being killed. Diegetic sounds are also used, which includes dialogue of the characters talking about being watched and about the attack. This makes the trailer come across with more suspense and leaves the audience with questions which they want answering. Also other sounds such as doors creaking, windows slamming and smashing plates and glasses, and many other sounds related to horror.

Mise en Scene

At the beginning to represent happiness we have high key lighting and towards the end we have low key lighting , which is more horror/thriller like, this leaves the audience scared  Props in the trailer are very homely and make it feel withing the comfort zone, and make it seem more realistic to happen to anyone, where ever they are. Makeup on the characters were very real and not much made them look like normal and they were dressed in casual clothes, which interacts with the audience and makes them believe that this is realism . Other props that were used are, weapons like knives and a gun, these relate to the horror genre,

Research and Planning - photoshop challenge

Here I have Used photoshop to create a horror film poster. I have got some ideas from looking at other horror film posters online, and I have used a background image then cut out a figure and inserted that in to fit in place and edited it. Then I have added text to complete the film poster.

Research and planning - Group Meeting

In my group I have 3 People including myself, Shema and Lauren. Each of us will be taking different roles during the process of our Trailer making. I will be taking the role of the Sound and Shema will be taking the role of the editing and Lauren taking the role of Mise- en- scene , and we will all be sharing the cinematography, as we think this will be one of the hardest things to do alone,

Research and Planning The chase

Here is a quick trailer, that myself, Shema and Lauren and Sarah have made using imovie. we have done this to see how well we worked in a group and who is the best at doing what part.we got a camera and went around the college recording a sequence. After we had gathered all the parts together we uploaded onto imovie and we edited it, including different transactions to make it faster and slower. We have also added music to  our little trailer. We used pan shots to show the scene of what is happening. We have also used close up shots to show the motion of the characters in the Chase, We have also used dissolves to show the connection between each character. My role in this clip was acting out the part, and also helping with the editing and i think we all worked very well within a group, I would defiantly work with this group again.

Research and planning - 4x genre post

  romance/comedy

In romance/comedy genres, there is more likely to be high key lighting and music that shows the characters emotions. mostly the view of love is shown through a female perspective in these films.when the characters are together there is likely to be a more upbeat music.

Horror

In the genre of horror, the lighting is more low key, and more high and low angles and over the shoulder shots are used. The music/sounds get built up with the film leading upto the part with the most tension, for example if someone is about to get stabbed, and someone is following them, the music will get build up.

comedy

comedy films have, high key lighting to show the characters emotions. The comedy films are different based on the characters and the female/male role, most comedy films concentrate on the individual person or the main group of people. The music in the film will be upbeat to show how the character is feeling.

social realism

social realism genres are mainly based on real life situations, mostly family and individual problems. The lighting could be very low key to show the situation the characters are in. The ending of the film would be high key lit, to show emotions of the character being happy. Also the main characters for these films are mainly male roles.
