This trailer has what Steve Neale said "genre is a repetition with an underlying pattern of variations" so this is like another horror genre film, with a twist, to make it individual, for example in other another horror genre film, like The conjuring their is a family who move into a new house and they start hearing noises and feeling a weird presence in their home. This film however is not at a new house, but they go on holiday and come under attack. They both have a similar concept but have their own twists on it to make it their own and different from previous horror genre films. Binary opposites are used, as we can identify the good from the bad, The scene where the man in the mask is sat near the other man, we can see the man in the mask is bad and could be portrayed as the killer, and not the other man. This portrays the genre of horror as in order to find out who is under the mask the characters suffer fear of who will be murdered next.
Representation
The representation of the female characters are very stereotypical in the trailer as they are the ones who are screaming and running around. However the men also are portrayed stereo typically as they are taking charge and protecting the women. Although we do see a role reversal as one of the women is covered in blood and is carrying a weapon, this conveys that the women is trying to capture the murderer. As Laura Mulvey said " Make gaze" I don't see it as the scenes are mostly focused on a group of people who are being attacked.
Narrative
The protagonist of the film is unclear, as a group of people are visible,I think it is possibly the man who is shown in a white jumper, who has his picture taken, or the blonde haired women or the women who has curly brown hair. After one of the men are killed, there are flashes into each of their faces. Ronald Barthes and Levi Strauss both mention Binary oppositions and this can be seen in the trailer as the family are on one side and the killer in the mask is on the other, this conveys the good and the bad side. Also equilibrium is shown, which is mentioned by Todorov, as at the beginning of the trailer the family are enjoying a meal and are portrayed as happy but then there is a disruption where one of the members are killed.
Audience
The trailer says its been approved for an appropriate audience, the film is rated 18, overall I think the the trailer will aim at females and males as who are interested in a film which has suspense and is a horror, although this doesn't look very scary, people who are interested in this will be able to watch it. Although this is rated an 18 and I am only 17 I would not mind watching this so I think the audience will be passive because watching the trailer it is not hard to figure out what is going on and they will be active to find out more about the killer and why its happening.
Media Language
cinematography
we can see the family and friends are going to an isolated area, as we can see long shots of the place and the house, which is giving us a brief insight into the genre of horror. Two shots have been used to portray the couples, which also shows that they are happy and also close ups are used on the characters which conveys their emotions. also low angles are used on the murderers this shows that the murderer is in power. Also a pan shot is used when the man is thrown towards the window and this shows us a sense of action and also The kulshov method is a montage at the end of the trailer.
Editing
At the beginning we have a dissolve which shows when the family are holding hands, this presents the families connection, also as they drove the car up we had a dissolve to show the length of their traveling. straight cuts are used mainly through the trailer but at the beginning its paced slow and gradually builds up towards the end,
Sound
At the start of the trailer Non diegetic sound is used, as the song is being played slowly and cheerfully as it mentions ' just a perfect day' which connects with what is on the screen, we then see a tittle saying ' the perfect family' this represents that the family are having a good time and are happy with their lives. Also other sounds such as a siren and a drum beat are also present through parts of the trailer, this reflects a more sinister tone on the trailer, indicating that something is not right. coming towards the end of the trailer the song repeats itself, as congruent sound as the song is happy in contrast to what is happening on screen, people being killed. Diegetic sounds are also used, which includes dialogue of the characters talking about being watched and about the attack. This makes the trailer come across with more suspense and leaves the audience with questions which they want answering. Also other sounds such as doors creaking, windows slamming and smashing plates and glasses, and many other sounds related to horror.
Mise en Scene
At the beginning to represent happiness we have high key lighting and towards the end we have low key lighting , which is more horror/thriller like, this leaves the audience scared Props in the trailer are very homely and make it feel withing the comfort zone, and make it seem more realistic to happen to anyone, where ever they are. Makeup on the characters were very real and not much made them look like normal and they were dressed in casual clothes, which interacts with the audience and makes them believe that this is realism . Other props that were used are, weapons like knives and a gun, these relate to the horror genre,
